The reasons why Geilo stands out from other Norwegian resorts are many, but one
of the main reasons is the close proximity between the skiing areas and
the town centre. You can actually walk from the skilifts to the town center
still wearing your skiboots!
Geilo is a lovely little village with shops, restaurants and all service
facilities in the town centre. Geilo is also Norway's most traditional ski
resort, having been a tourist destination for more than 100 years. Its long
history and well organized infrastructure, benefits its guests greatly,
and makes Geilo a unique place.
Geilo has a central location in Southern Norway, 800 metres above sea level
half way between Oslo and Bergen.
With the Hallingskarvet mountain as its backbone and Hardangervidda, Northern
Europe’s largest mountain plateau, as its nearest neighbour, Geilo
offer unique possibiliteis for great experiences all year.
Geilo’s natural surroundings, terrain and variety of slopes have made
it Norway’s No. 1 winter sports resort. The pistes in Geilo are of
top international standard and cater for all ages and ability levels, from
beginner to professional.
The winter experience is complete when you can ski down well-prepared slopes
in blazing sunshine with a great view over Geilo in the Hallingdal valley.
Children have a good time with us the whole year. Activities are specially
prepared for children of all ages, both summer and winter, inside and outside.
All the largest hotels provide special rooms for the children with pencils
and paper, lego and other fun things. For the ones of higher age there
is also pool tables, slot machines, table tennis and much more.
You can also play in the water. Most of the hotels have swimmingpools where
you can play and have a good time in safe and cosy conditions together with
the family.
Flights and Transfers
Geilo is served by Oslo Gardamon (British Airways, Norwegian and SAS) and
by Olso Torp (Ryan Air). For guests travelling via Oslo Gardamon the transfer
is by regular shuttle bus and takes approximately 2 3 D4 hours. Geilo is
also on the main Oslo Bergen railway line. The train from Oslo takes 2 hours.
For clients using the lowcost alternative to Oslo Torp, then we recommend
a hire car. The drive is relatively straight forward and takes approximately
4 hours. All hire cars come equipped for winter driving with snow tyres
and chains. For flights that arrive in the morning we can arrange rail transfers
from Sandefjord to Geilo. Oslo Torp is 15minutes away by regular bus to
Sandefjord railway station.
If you would like to take your own car we can arrange overnight ferry crossings
to both Kristiansand and Stavanger. The drive to Geilo from either port
takes around 6 hours and your car has to be equipped with winter tyres.

The Skiing
The Geilo ski pass covers 20 lifts which serve two separate areas Geilo
and Geilolia linkled by free regular ski bus. Geilo’s skiing is primarily
for beginners through to aspiring skiers or snowboarders.
Beginners
One of the advantages of skiing in Norway is that everyone speaks English.
The nursery slopes are perhaps some of the best designed in Europe with
a mix of moving walkways, ski tows and chairlifts serving wide gentle areas.
From Geilo Fjellandsby beginners – both adults and children will soon
gain the confidence and skills to tackle the longer runs from Kikuttoppen
down the Geilolia or from Slaatta up to Havdalshovda which is the highest
point on the Geilo side.
Intermediates
Intermediates will revel in the wide well prepared pistes. Each lift opens
up a choice of routes down – where ever there is a black run there
are also blue and red alternatives. There is flood lit skiing on the mile
long red Asle loypa at Geilolia or the Geilo red served by the Geilo Heisen
express quad chair.
Advanced
Advanced skiers will perhaps be able to ski the area out within a couple
of days. However there are around 7 black slopes which need to be treated
with respect. Geilo has 2 fun parks with monster jumps and Norways only
super half pipe.
Family Skiing
Families used to the hustle and bustle of traditional Alpine resorts in
during the school holidays will be pleasantly surprised with Geilo –
wide open well prepared pistes, very few (if any) lift queues, high standard
of English speaking instructors and a varied area.
